Policy on Outstanding Performance Awards


1. AIMS

1.1 To recognize and reward the outstanding performance and achievement of individual UIC staff member in one of the following areas:

(i) Teaching

(ii) Service; or

(iii) Research.


1.2 To signify the College’s commitment to recognizing and promoting excellence in

(i) Teaching, (ii) Service; and (iii) Research.



2. AREAS/NUMBER OF AWARDS

2.1 President’s Award for TEACHING: To be awarded annually with a maximum of two awardees.

2.2 President’s Award for SERVICE: To be awarded annually with one awardee for academic staff and one for admin staff;

2.3 President’s Award for RESEARCH: To be awarded annually with a maximum of one awardee for Established Researcher and/or one for Young Researcher.



3. ELIGIBILITY

         All full-time staff members who have at least two years of full-time service at the College are eligible for nomination to the Selection Panel, except for those who have one of the improper behaviors listed in Appendix 2.


4. STRUCTURE


4.1 Each teaching unit should nominate at least one candidate in each applicable category within the specified timeframe. Administrative unit is to nominate to the Selection Panel no more than one staff member

4.2 Nomination by Vice Presidents, Deans, Associate Deans, Centre/Office Directors, and Associate/Assistant Centre/Office Directors could be accepted by the Selection Panel. For President’s Award for Service for administrative staff, nominations from administrative unit heads or Vice Presidents could be accepted.

4.3 The Awards are “discipline-neutral”

4.4 As a token of recognition of their outstanding performance, each awardee will receive a plaque and a cash award of RMB 10,000, meanwhile, the awardee’s department would also get RMB 10,000 to celebrate the honor.


4.5 In any year, the Selection Panel reserves the right:

(i) not to choose an awardee if no nomination for a specific category meets the criteria; and

(ii) to choose fewer awardees than the maximum available for any category.

6. SELECTION CRITERIA

6.1 All nominees for the Award will be assessed on the evidence/information they provide in relation to the criteria pertaining to each category. The examples given below are not meant to be exhaustive.


6.2 The criteria carry no specified weighting. The Selection Panel will consider each nomination on its own merit with reference to the criteria.


6.3 Criteria for President’s Award for TEACHING

6.3.1 A genuine care and concern for students’ performance and development, for example:-

n being responsive to student feedback

n devoting time to meet students outside the classroom for discussion and counseling

n careful design and assessment of student assignments

6.3.2 An adoption of learner-centered approaches; an ability to engage and inspire students; superior classroom teaching which may include:-

n demonstration of a good understanding of pedagogy

n adoption of suitable teaching and assessment approaches to enhance student learning outcomes

n an ability to interact with students and engage them in learning with enthusiasm

n an ability to inspire students with respect to their diverse learning needs and to help students in building confidence and capability (including critical thinking, analytical skills and values etc.)

6.3.3 Excellence in course/programme/curriculum design/development that reflects a command of the field, which may include:-

n demonstrating up-to-date knowledge of the field of study in the design/development of the curriculum including the development of new courses, and student learning resources (e.g., textbooks and e-learning resources) and supervision of final-year projects

n adopting complementary research-informed teaching practices and developing and adopting innovative approaches to teaching and assessment which can facilitate students’ achievement of the learning outcomes

6.3.4 Past/present achievement(s) and leadership in teaching and potential scholarly contribution to and impact on the development of effective teaching practice within the institution and/or in other institutions, which may include:

n demonstrating outstanding teaching evaluations and publications in teaching related areas(s)

n proof of national and international professional memberships and commendation letters from former students

n demonstrating educational research and innovations in the field of study

n demonstrating leadership in the promotion of teaching excellence within the institution and/or in other institutions


6.4 Criteria for President’s Award for SERVICE

[Nominees for the Service Award must have track record of achievement beyond their normal duties or job scope]

A. For Administrative staff

6.4.1 Dedication and commitment to serve the College and the Unit

6.4.2 Outstanding achievement in addition to his/her normal duties or job scope


6.4.3 Positive morale through a congenial and supportive attitude and by providing service to other stakeholders of the College community, the professional community, and the community at large (remunerative consultancies/services shall not be considered).

6.4.4 Continuous self-improvement as well as development and recognition of others.

6.4.5 Enhancement of the image and impact of the College and the Unit and provision of exceptional service to committees and the larger community in areas related to the mission of the College

6.4.6 Exhibition of initiative and creativity resulting in improved operating efficiency and/or available resources of the College and Unit.

6.4.7 Outstanding achievement in addition to his/her normal duties or job scope


B. For Teaching staff

6.4.1 Dedication and commitment to serve the College and the Unit.

6.4.2 Positive morale through a congenial and supportive attitude and by providing service to other stakeholders of the College community, the professional community, and the community at large (remunerative consultancies/services shall not be considered).

6.4.3 Continuous self-improvement as well as development and recognition of others.

6.4.4 Enhancement of the image and impact of the College and the Unit and provision of exceptional service to the larger community in areas related to the mission of the College.

6.4.5 Provision of service to students through exemplary mentoring or special assistance to students and extraordinary service to students through advising and assistance to clubs etc.

6.4.6 Innovative leadership and/or participation in programs, committees and activities.

6.4.7 Outstanding achievement in addition to his/her normal duties or job scope


6.5 Criteria for President’s Award for RESEARCH

[Established Researcher Award will be provided to academic staff members who have obtained PhD for 10 years or more years and who have met the following criteria. Young Researcher Award will be provided to academic staff members who have obtained PhD for less than 10 years and who have met the following criteria.]

6.5.1 High quality of supervision of undergraduate/MPhil/PhD/postdoctoral candidates.

6.5.2 High quality of research as evidenced by per reviews, citations, as well as awards, honors, prizes, and research grants.

6.5.3 High quality of research publications making an important impact on and contribution to the relevant academic discipline or profession, which is widely recognized in the field.

6.5.4 Recognition as an expert in the field as evidenced by i) invitations to be keynote speaker in important international conferences and/or symposiums; and ii) journal editorships and committee member of national and international professional bodies, and/or membership of the review panel for other forms of quality scholarly output.

6.5.5 Independent research leadership leading to initiation and development of creative ideas, theories, discovery of new frontiers, and/or enrichment of related disciplines.

6.5.6 Demonstration of growing maturity in research with emerging standing in international academia.

6.5.7 Contributions to research-related services at the College level and/or Faculty/School/Unit level.

3. To engage office(s) in the undertaking of administrative follow-up actions as and when appropriate.


4. To engage an external expert to review the research portfolios of applicants and make recommendations to the Selection Panel.


5. The decision of the Panel shall be final.

Two Full Professors

Appendix 2

Improper behaviors in evaluating the Code of Ethics of Academic Staff



1. Violating laws, regulations and policies, and make inappropriate remarks in public (including weibo, WeChat, and network, etc.)

2. Violating admission policy for personal gain

3. Conducting sexual harassment or having inappropriate sexual relations with students

4. Illegal acceptance of cash, gifts, cash gifts, securities, payment vouchers, etc.

5. Misappropriation of a student's due allowance or personal income

6. Failure to review academic papers and feedback on time and generate a negative impact

7. Asking for Illegal charge in the process of paper evaluation, defense and other personnel training; or problematic paper has been found in the dissertation spot check.

8. Showing bad attitude throughout the whole appraisal process, and the appraisal opinion is not earnest and serious enough. Illegally have someone else sign on your behalf and generate a bad effect.

9. Forcing students to deal with personal or family matters and generate a negative impact

10. Showing failure to guide students actively, initiatively and earnestly. Receiving student’s complaints and verification of failure to perform teacher's duties


Note:

1. Applicants that have one of the above behaviors shall not be eligible for the award.

2. The College reserves the right to take necessary action subject to different situations.

1.违反法律、法规、政策,发表不当言论行为(包括微博、微信、网络等);

2.违反招生政策,谋取个人私利;

3.对学生实施性骚扰或与学生发生不正当男女关系;

4.违规收受现金、礼金、礼品、有价证券、支付凭证等;

5.不当占有学生应得津贴或收入;

6.不按时审阅学术学位论文和反馈意见并产生不良影响;

7. 在论文评审、答辩等人才培养环节,违规收取费用;在学位论文抽检方面出现“存在问题”论文;

8. 在培养环节的鉴定、评审意见不认真、不严肃,违规让他人代签并产生不良影响;

9. 强迫学生处理个人或家庭事务并产生不良影响;

10. 不积极、主动、认真指导学生,没有尽到老师应尽的职责,受到学生投诉并得到核实。

提示:

1. 当年参选校长奖的教学人员如有涉及以上任何一项的行为,即取消申请资格。

2. 学校保留根据不同的情况采取必要行动的权利。
